Overview of Demographics
Information from the Population Reference Bureau (2016)
Total Population: 193 million
Birth Rate: 10 births per 1000 population
Death Rate: 10 deaths per 1000 population
Life Expectancy: Male 79 years Female 84 years Combined 81 years
Infant Mortality Rate: deaths per 1000 births
Total Fertility Rate: 1.7 children
Literacy Rate: 99% population
Rate of Natural Increase: 0 people per 1000 population
Analysis: The sub-region of Eastern Europe is a highly developed region, and most of the countries in western europe are MDCs. Western Europe has a relatively low birth rate and low death rate, a common attribute of MDCs. The low infant mortality rate and death rate, and rate of natural increase further the idea of a MDC dominant region. Healthcare is widespread which keep down births and death at birth. This also leads to longer life expediencies compared to other regions. The death rate is equal to the birth rate which means that the country is staying at the same population. This translates to a stage 4 in the Demographic Transition Model.amount of children women are having in the region displays that women are playing larger roles in the country. Women have jobs, which means that they aren't staying home to take care of a bunch of kids.Pay gaps still however, and the fight against gender inequality is ongoing.

Analysis of population pyramids:
France- France’s population is 66,836,154. France currently is a stage 4 due to its straight up stature. This display the characteristic of being in a 0 for RNI.
UK- UK’s population is 64,430,428. Uk is currently in stage 5. This is a very developed country that actually has a declining birthrate.
Ireland- Ireland’s Population is 4,952,473. Ireland is currently in stage ¾. It still has a pyramid shaped structure, attributable to poor health care, however, it is better than most stage 3’s .
Spain- Spain’s population is currently 48,563,476 . Spain is in stage 5. This is a very developed country that actually has a declining birthrate.
Portugal- Portugal’s population is currently 10,833,816. Portugal is in stage 4 due to its straight up stature. This display the characteristic of being in a 0 for RNI. Portugal has a relatively small young and old population, with a large middle aged population. Some may consider this country to e stage 5.
Italy- Italy’s population is currently 62,007,540. Italy is in stage 4 due to its straight up stature. This display the characteristic of being in a 0 for RNI. Italy is nearing a stage 5 as its younger population decreases.

Population Density
Analysis: Western European demographics have a few key trends. Firstly is the tendency to populate near the coast. There are two reasons why this happens. First is massive amount of industries and jobs that rely on the coasts. The second is the favorable mild climate that is associated with coastal cities. The density map clearly shows how population tends to decrease as one goes inland. Northern cities that are not located along the coast, tend to be uninhabited due to the unfavorable climate for both living and agriculture. According to the Population Reference Bureau, the Western Europe sub-region is 79% urban and 21% rural.
