Social Issues in Western Europe
Refugees -
The refugees that are coming into the EU from Syria and other places, often experience some discrimination and cause unrest in the lives of Europeans. According to www.pewglobal.org, many people in European nations are afraid that the increase of refugees will cause more terrorist attacks, decrease the amount of jobs available, and absorb the social benefits offered to the EU’s citizens.
These graphs from www.pewglobal.org show people’s opinions on the refugees what they they think will happen with the economic and social standings of the EU.
LGBTQ+ and Marriage -
Despite the fact that the US has legalized same sex marriage, there is still conflict between the nations of the EU on this issue. While there is a lot of support for LGBTQ+ people, there is also a lot of negativity. Currently, East and West European nations are divided on this issue. According to www,pewresearch.org, many people believe that others should be able to live the lives that they want to. The nation most against same sex marriage is Russia. Due to this divide, there has been talk about using the Netherlands as an asylum to Russians wanting to escape the anti-homosexual environment of the nation. This issue can also cause many political and economical issues that can hurt the EU.
Social Standings with Russia -
Many people today have a lack of confidence in Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin. Both old and young adults don’t believe he handles international affairs well and that Russia doesn’t act very well when it comes to the personal freedoms of its citizens. This tension and distrust between the EU and Russia can cause more problems than it already has politically, economically, and socially. The reason for all the uncertainty with Russia is the previous actions that have been taken by the nation have been suspicious, unsettling, and disagreeable. The EU doesn’t completely trust the country to do what is right for the world and its citizens.
