People move to new places, or migrate, due to push and pull factors. Push and Pull factors are things or motivations that convinces, inspires, persuades and encourages immigrants (people who comes into a foreign country to live) and emigrants (people who leave their home country to live somewhere else) to move or come into a new place or country. These factors can be environmental, cultural, political, and/or economic. Push factors make their residents what to leave, and Pull factors reel in residents to their country. One of the first push factors in France was religious persecution between the Roman Catholic majority and Protestant minority. Some of their pull factors are is the city of Paris itself. France is also a huge tourist trap with the well-known landmark The Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elyse and the very famous museum The Louvre. For Italy, a push factor was great crop failures and famines of the 1840’s that led to starvation, disease, and poverty. Some pull factor are lower crime rate and better policing, also excellent education prospects and higher adult literacy rates. Another pull factor is the Coliseum, which is the biggest amphitheater ever built. For Belgium, it push factor is that their government pay very high income tax, which is tax charged by the government directly from income. Some of their pull factor are as the following: high salary rate, good healthcare, and generally good connection to education. One of Netherlands push factors was when WW2 broke out in Europe in 1939-1945. Netherlands was invaded by the German Nazi’s. Another push factor was in 1953 when a flood disaster devastated the Dutch. Some pull factors for Netherlands that bought in people were was to find more fertile land to escape famine, disease, and to find safety in a more settled environment and climate. Another pull factor for Netherlands was their “US Refugee Relief Act” that allowed 15,000 refugee Dutch refugees. In Portugal, these are some of their push and pull factors. Starting with the push factors, one them is that Portugal is one of the most corrupted countries in Europe, which has caused many bridges to be unfinished. Also, they have a very low minimum wage of €565.83 per month ($599.38). One last push is that, even though food prices and rent are manageable, the cost of gasoline and medical insurance have been growing to the point where it’s not worth it. For pull factors, education is growing and causing more businesses, also the climate there is nice and the architecture drives people in. For the United Kingdom, a push factor would be that their income rates are lower compared to other countries such as Australia. In the United Kingdom, someone working full time get about €265.00 ($280.71), but in Australia, that would be €385.00 ($407.83). Also, the cost in homes has raised and residents move out to find cheaper places. Some pull factors are that there are lots of fertile soil and land for farming. There is also religious freedom for all who come and live there. Now for Ireland. A push factor was, in 1845 to 1855, a potato famine caused many farmers to have little income. But for pull factors, Ireland’s lifestyle had change from rural to industrial, which improved many thing in their country. Last is Spain, one of their push factors was The 1868 Glorious Revolution (La Gloriosa) erupted in Spain and emigrants fled to America. One of their pull factors is that there is greater wealth and job possibilities there in Spain.
